This dataset is part of a collection of flood hazard maps (see https://data.jrc.ec.europa.eu/collection/id-0054) based on streamflow data from the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS), computed using two-dimensional hydrodynamic models, and produced for several return periods (i.e. flood probability). A flood event with 10-year return period has 1/10 = 10% chance of being exceeded in any one year; A flood event with 100-year return period has 1/100 = 1% chance of being exceeded in any one year.
Inundated areas for flood events with a return period of 100 years are based on GloFAS climatology. Permanent water bodies are derived from the Global Lakes and Wetlands Database (GLWD - https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/global-lakes-and-wetlands-database) and from the Natural Earth lakes map (https://www.naturalearthdata.com).

This dataset is based on JRC modelling tools and have several limitations which should be taken into account during usage (see mentioned references for a detailed description - http://data.europa.eu/89h/jrc-floods-floodmapgl_rp100y-tif). The map might differ from official national flood hazard maps.
