Five datasets were downloaded from the Worldclim website: monthly total precipitation, annual total precipitation, monthly daily maximum temperature, monthly daily minimum temperature and annual daily average temperature. Monthly daily average temperature data was then derived from the monthly daily maximum and minimum temperature datasets. These six datasets, along with CGIAR 1 kilometer SRTM Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data, provided the source data for calculating Rivas-Martinez et. al.'s (2004) indices:
Continentality Index: Ic = Tmax - Tmin
Thermicity Index: It = (T + m + M) * 10 (Elevation Adjusted Thermicity Index: It_adj = (T_adj + M_adj + m) * 10) Compensated Thermicity Index (Itc) calculated as follows: (1) If Ic < 8, then Itc = It - C where C = (8.0 - Ic) * 10 (2) If 8 <= Ic <= 18, then Itc = It (3) If Ic > 18, then Itc = It + C where:
18<Ic<=21 f1=5 C =C1 where C1=f1(Ic-18) 21<Ic<=28 f2=15 C =C1+C2 where C1=f1(21-18)=15; C2=f2(Ic-21) 28<Ic<=46 f3=25 C =C1+C2+C3 (where C1 =15; C2=f2(28-21)=105; C3=f3(Ic-28)) 46<Ic<=65 f4=30 C =C1+C2+C3+ C4 (where C1=15; C2=105; C3=f3(46-28)=425; C4=f4(Ic- 46)) (Elevation Adjusted Compensated Thermicity Index: Itc_adj = Itc + (13 * dem_zones))
Ombrothermic Index: Io = (Pp / Tp) * 10
Io of the driest two-month period of the driest quarter: Iod2 = (Ppd2 / Tpd2) * 10
Io of the warmest two months of the summer quarter : Ios2 = (Pps2/ Tps2) * 10
Io of the summer quarter: Ios3
Io of the summer quarter and the month immediately prior to the quarter: Ios4
Average maximum temperature of the coldest month in the year: M (M_adj = Average maximum temperature of the coldest month of they year adjusted for higher elevations: Increase M by 0.5 for every 100m above 200m)
Average minimum temperature of the coldest month in the year: m
Total precipitation of the warmest four-month period in the year: Pcm1
Total precipitation of the four months immediately after the four months used to determine Pcm1: Pcm2
Total precipitation of the four months immediately prior to the four months used to determine Pcm1: Pcm3
Total positive precipitation of the year: Pp
Total positive precipitation of the driest two-month period in the driest quarter: Ppd2 Total positive precipitation of the summer-quarter: Pps
Total positive precipitation of the warmest two months of the summer quarter: Pps2
The total precipitation of the warmest six-month period in the year: Pss
The total precipitation of the coldest six-month period in the year: Psw
Yearly average temperature: T (T_adj = Increase Yearly Average temperature by 0.6C for every 100m above 200m) Average temperature of the warmest month: Tmax
Average temperature of the coldest month: Tmin
Total positive temperature of the year: Tp
Total positive temperature of the driest two-month period of the driest quarter: Tpd2
Total positive temperature of the summer quarter: Tps
Total positive temperature of the warmest two months of the summer quarter: Tps2

The study area for the African terrestrial ecological footprint mapping project includes all of continental Africa, plus various nearby island nations (i.e. Canary Islands, Cabo Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Saint Helena, Prince Edward Islands, Madagascar, Isles Eparses, Comores, Seychelles, Reunion, and Mauritius). The African isobioclimates map reflects this geographic extent.
