The chlorophyll-a concentrations anomaly is computed for Africa in the eStation (https://estation.jrc.ec.europa.eu/eStation2/) on a monthly basis.
The chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chla) are retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data using the algorithm described in: Le, CF; Hu, CM; English, D; Cannizzaro, J; Chen, ZG; Feng, L; Boler, R; Kovach, C (2013). Towards a long-term chlorophyll-a data record in a turbid estuary using MODIS observations. PROGRESS IN OCEANOGRAPHY, 109, 90-103. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pocean.2012.10.002
The monthly anomaly is the difference between the Chla for one given month (monthly mean composite) and the long term average for the same month over the period 2002 to present. A positive anomaly means the monthly Chla is higher than the long-term average for that month; a negative anomaly means it is lower than the average. The layer displays the latest map available (for the last full month) and is updated monthly. The Chla is expressed in milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3).
