The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a world leader in Numerical Weather Predictions providing high-quality data for weather forecasts and environmental monitoring.

In January 2026, the ECMWF launched a new activity under the Africa Regional Centres of Excellence (ArcX) Climate Change Resilience Component, implemented on behalf of the European Commission's DG INTPA. This four-year initiative is carried out in partnership with the JRC and complements other Regional Centres of Excellence in Africa focused on agro-ecology, water, ocean, biodiversity & forest.

Activities under ArcX focus on science, technology and innovation and aim to establish a bridge with EU's Digital Agenda. This includes alignement with the Destination Earth Initiative (DestinE), the use of AI/ML techniques, and advances in climate change services such as the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and ClimSA programmes.
