Effective Leaf Area Index
This dataset, part of the Earth Land Information System (ELIS), provides critical measurements of the Effective Leaf Area Index (LAIe) and its anomalies. It is designed to monitor the distribution, seasonal evolution, and rapid changes in vegetation health and ecosystem dynamics across the African continent.
LAIe is a quantitative, non-dimensional measure of the amount of live green leaf material present per unit of ground surface, typically expressed in m2/m2. Unlike "True LAI," which accounts for the total physical leaf area, Effective LAI is derived from canopy gap fraction measurements and assumes a random distribution of foliage. It is a critical parameter for modeling evapotranspiration and carbon fluxes between the biosphere and the atmosphere.
This dataset contains two primary layers, updated every 10 days to capture from January 2003 to February 2023:
- Effective LAIe (Absolute): Provides the current distribution and state of foliage density.
- Effective LAIe Anomalies: Represents the deviation of current vegetation density against a historical baseline (calculated relative to the average values between 2003 and 2010).
Negative anomalies (reduced foliage density) are primarily driven by climatic factors such as temperature increases and precipitation deficits. Additionally, localized impacts from human activities and animal grazing are captured in these deviations. The combined dataset is widely utilized in agro-meteorology, biogeochemical modeling, and General Circulation Models (GCMs) to parameterize vegetation cover and analyze its complex interactions with the climate and atmosphere.
